Why Filler Content Is Hurting Your Brand (And What to Do Instead)

The Huddle Banner – Ashley Tip Tuesday (Blog Banner)

You’ve seen it. In fact, you've likely even posted it. (No shame – we've all been there).

You know what I'm talking about – those “Happy National [Insert Obscure Holiday]” stock photos with a basic caption, little context, and no real reason to engage.

Let’s be honest: filler content is everywhere.

And I get why – it's quick, easy, and makes it feel like you're doing something to stay active with your audience.

But here’s the truth no one wants to admit:

If your content isn’t sparking emotion, starting a conversation, or showing people who you are…it’s not helping your brand. It might even be hurting it.

Because if you're consistently sharing posts with no personality or purpose, you're basically training your audience (and the algorithm) to ignore you.

So let’s talk about what to do instead.👇

What Counts as "Filler" Content?

Filler content is any post that’s published just to check a box.

It looks like this:

  • A basic holiday graphic with no caption or insight

  • A generic stock image or quote (“Grateful.”) with no story or personalization

  • A repost with no added commentary

  • A weekly “quote of the day” with no other context

Because here’s the thing to think about: if you wouldn’t stop and engage with it…why would anyone else?

How to Turn Filler Into Content That Actually Connects

If you’re short on time or ideas, use these three simple strategies to post something better in just a few minutes.

1. Make It Personal

Instead of just saying “Happy Valentine’s Day!”, tell us what the day means to you.

  • Did a client give you a kind note that reminded you why you love this job?
  • Do you have a family tradition that makes you laugh?
  • Even a quick photo of your morning coffee in a heart mug feels more real and relatable than a generic stock graphic.

👉 Pro tip: Stories > statements. Every time.

2. Show Your Face

Content with your face in it consistently performs better. Not because you need to be perfectly polished or poised — but because you’re human.

So ditch the stock photos and post:

  • A quick selfie (Going somewhere interesting? Wearing a fun outfit? We want to see!)

  • A 10-second “Happy Friday” video

  • A behind-the-scenes look at your day

  • Your pet or your kid (Because let’s be honest — dogs and babies crush it on every platform.)

Because when you show up, people remember.

I'll remember your face, your outfit, and your mug WAY more than any stock photo post – because it actually tells me something about YOU.

And believe me when I say, so will the rest of your audience.

3. Start a Conversation

The difference between filler content and engaging content often comes down to this one thing:

🗣️ Did you give your audience something to respond to?

Instead of “Happy Thanksgiving,” say:

  • “What’s your go-to dish that no one else eats but you love it anyway?”

  • “This time last year, I was helping a client close two days before the holiday – what’s your most chaotic close ever?”

Asking a simple question, sharing a small story, or prompting reflection can turn a “meh” moment into a memorable post.

🎯 Long story short? Your content should feel like a conversation.

If your audience feels like you’re just broadcasting into the void, they’ll scroll past.

But when you post something relatable, useful, or real? They stop. They listen. They respond.

And that’s when you'll start seeing real results.

So let’s leave filler content in the past, and start showing up in a way that actually grows your business.
